I checked out some other recipes after the fact - some had flour and/or baking soda/powder, and the recipe we were following did not. So that may have something to do w/it! Another recipe did use egg as a binder - again which we did not have. So I'm going to follow another recipe next time - and maybe use dried chickpeas that have been soaked!
